I now use Hotelist to find hotels when I travel. Quickly realized smaller privately owned boutique hotels are generally a way better experience than the big hotel chains — more character, often cheaper, and the staff actually cares.

In SF, Xfinity's NOW WiFi Pass is $10 for 30 days — no contract, no gear. Hotspots are everywhere (look for xfinitywifi), so you can skip hunting cafe WiFi and random public networks. Great default when you're moving around the city.
